You might hear from friends, your neighbors, or a friend of a friend, about all the rumors and myths of braces and orthodontic treatment. Here are a few myths and the truth behind the most common misconceptions of orthodontics.

Myth: I have braces, now I can't play sports.
Truth: Having braces, does not mean you have to stop living your life! As long as you wear a mouthguard, braces should not stop you or your child from playing your favorite sport. Ask Dr. Coleman and our staff for more information on using a mouthguard.

Myth: Only kids need to see an orthodontist?
Truth: Everyone, no matter the age can benefit from a healthy straight smile. Every patient is different, the reality is that at any age teeth can impact you. As an adult your teeth may shift and look different. As a child, you may want to bring them in to ensure their jaws, teeth and oral health are all on track to a healthy journey.

Myth: My teeth will remain straight permanently after treatment
Truth: Orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign and braces are one of the most effective ways to straighten your teeth. However, your teeth will start to drift back to the original position if you do not wear your retainer as recommended by your orthodontist. Or you may notice your teeth begin to shift as you grow older.

Myth: My dentist says he can give me braces
Truth: Pause and consult with an orthodontist. While all orthodontists are dentists, a very few percentage of dentists are also orthodontists. An orthodontist is a dental specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists must successfully complete an additional two to three-year residency program of advanced dental education in orthodontics.
