Did you know your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and contains a high percentage of minerals? These minerals provide enamel with the strength it needs to protect the teeth and help keep them looking bright and white This hard, outer surface layer of your teeth acts as a protection shield against your teeth. Image
Coleman Orthodontics You may have noticed lately that some online direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies have been making orthodontic treatment sound super easy…just take a selfie and you’ll receive aligners in the mail and after so many months…Presto Change-o...Straight teeth! While it may initially sound great to save money by purchasing your orthodontic treatment online without having to talk to anyone at all, the reality is… the money you save today may end up costing you thousands of dollars in future corrective action. Before you decide to proceed with a direct-to-consumer orthodontic company, Dr. Coleman , his team , and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) believe there are a number of factors and questions you may want to consider.  For example, in some instances direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies do not involve the in-person evaluation or the in-person supervision of your orthodontic treatment by an orthodontist. An in-person evaluat...

2 Minutes 2 Times a Day

American Dental Association Seeking orthodontic treatment is a great way to make sure your oral health is in good shape. However, there are other factors that affect the status of healthy teeth. Brushing, flossing and eating habits are just as important.  Did you know that the baby teeth that appear in the first 3 years of a child's life have been there since birth, in the baby’s jawbones? Those baby teeth are key for chewing, speaking and appearance. They also hold space in the jaws for upcoming adult teeth. Even though they fall out, baby teeth are important and you need to take good care of them.  In an effort to help Keep Kids' Mouth's Healthy, The Ad Council has started the 2min2x Children's Oral Health Campaign . For healthier teeth, good breath and fewer cavities kids need to remember to brush their teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day. Adopting these healthy brushing habits can help save children from a lifetime of tooth pain.  Dr. Coleman and ...

4 Benefits of Straight Teeth for You [Updated 2020]

When people think of orthodontics, of course an enhanced smile is what most think of. Did you know orthodontic treatment does so much more than make our smiles straight? Orthodontic treatment helps correct abnormal bites such as an overbite or underbite. It helps us speak clearer and keeps our teeth cleaner. At Coleman Orthodontics, we can successfully correct most problems regardless of the patient’s age . Here are 4 benefits of having straight teeth. 1. Healthy Gums: Our gums say so much about our oral health and how we take care of our teeth. It's no secret the dangers of gum disease and the negative effect it has on your overall health. Gum disease can cause tooth decay and loss and bad breath. With orthodontic treatment, your teeth are spaced out correctly, which helps you brush and floss in between your teeth, leading to healthier gums. 2. Improved Speech: Just like how we chew and bite, our teeth play a large role in the way we speak. Gapped or crowded teeth can affe...

Orthodontic Basics: All You Need to Know [Updated 2020]

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment? Aesthetics – Who doesn’t love a great smile? – on other people and on themselves! This is the number one benefit of orthodontic treatment. Bite – A  good bite is just as important as a great smile. A good bite makes chewing more efficient, prevents premature wear of the teeth and typically allows the jaw muscles to function in better harmony.  Does orthodontic treatment require metal braces only? Not necessarily – Some minor problems can be corrected with retainers and more difficult problems can be treated with Invisalign or tooth-colored braces. Dr. Coleman will help you understand your orthodontic problems and options available to treat those problems.  Do I need to wait for my dentist to tell me when it’s time to see the orthodontist? No – The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all kids have an orthodontic consultation starting around age 7. Not many kids need early treatment at this ag...

Service Project: Community Schools

Image
Dear Friends and Families, We have been very fortunate as an orthodontic staff over the last two years to be involved together with many of you in providing service to various people and organizations in need.  It has been so rewarding for us to team up with you and witness the generosity of so many who have willingly supported our cause. Two years ago, we collected clothing and supplies to donate to the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City .  The response from you was so overwhelming that the shelter did not have room enough for all of the clothes that we delivered. Last year, you helped us collect hygiene products that were given to women recovering from drug addictions and abuse and to their children who they were doing their best to raise. This year, we have identified another need and would like to invite you to participate with us in supporting this organization.  Community Schools has teamed with the Ogden School District and the United Way in helping and suppo...

Breathing Problems and Orthodontics

Does Your Child Have a Breathing Problem? Does your child breath loud and mostly through their mouth? Do they snore when they sleep? Do they have frequent sore throats, ear and nose infections or allergies and asthma? If so, your child may have a problem with the size of their airway. These are all common symptoms of children who have difficulty breathing because of airway problems. One of our main focuses when we examine children at Coleman Orthodontics , is their airway and breathing patterns. An airway can be partially blocked due to a deviated septum, large adenoids or tonsils or because of allergies. A small airway results in kids breathing more out of their mouths than their nose. This increased “mouth breathing” can cause the jaws to develop narrow and small which can then lead to severe crowding problems with the erupting teeth. Another problem often associated with breathing and airway challenges is sleep. Many kids who struggle to breath properly aren’t able to achieve...
