Orthodontic Basics: All You Need to Know [Updated 2020]

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?
  • Aesthetics – Who doesn’t love a great smile? – on other people and on themselves! This is the number one benefit of orthodontic treatment.
  • Bite – A  good bite is just as important as a great smile. A good bite makes chewing more efficient, prevents premature wear of the teeth and typically allows the jaw muscles to function in better harmony.
Does orthodontic treatment require metal braces only?
  • Not necessarily – Some minor problems can be corrected with retainers and more difficult problems can be treated with Invisalign or tooth-colored braces. Dr. Coleman will help you understand your orthodontic problems and options available to treat those problems.
Do I need to wait for my dentist to tell me when it’s time to see the orthodontist?
  • No – The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all kids have an orthodontic consultation starting around age 7. Not many kids need early treatment at this age but many potential difficult orthodontic problems can be diagnosed and options given to guide future treatment.
Can my dentist just do my braces?
  • Some dentists do braces on patients. Dentists and orthodontists are the same but different, however. They both attend dental school to become dentists first.  But an orthodontist is required to attend an additional two to three years of training focused only on the growth and development of the face, mouth and teeth.  Orthodontists learn the problems that can be associated with this growth and development and become trained on how to correct them using orthodontic appliances. Orthodontic treatment is their only focus once they become orthodontists.  That is why they are called “orthodontic specialists.”
