The 5 Worst Halloween Treats for Braces

If you’ve visited the pumpkin patch here in Syracuse or gone on the hayride, you know Halloween is right around the corner! October is a special month for all of us at Coleman Orthodontics because it is National Orthodontic Health Month! We love seeing so many beautiful smiles transformed in our community. October is the perfect opportunity to mix in the fun of Halloween, costumes, and candies with education for Orthodontic Health Month.

With so many Halloween treats, there are certain types of candies and treats that are more harmful than others. These candies can cause damage to braces causing an interruption in an orthodontic treatment plan. Here are the five worst Halloween treats you should avoid if you or your child has braces.

1. Hard Candy
While soft candy, such as chocolate and cookies are okay for those wearing braces, hard candies are a big treat to avoid this month and during your orthodontic treatment. Hard candies can cause wires to come loose, brackets to break and ultimately cause discomfort. It’s best to avoid these treats for a while.

2. Chewy / Sticky Candy
Chewy and sticky candy is another type of candy to avoid. Chewy candy such as taffy, caramel, Tootsie rolls, starbursts and others can bend and break your braces. It’s best to avoid these treats and trade them for something soft.

3. Bubblegum
The ever-popular bubblegum is a big one to avoid not just on Halloween night. Bubblegum can get stuck in between your teeth and braces.

4. Licorice
Licorice is a popular type of Halloween candy passed out through the night. Chances are you will find a few pieces in your Halloween candy bag. Licorice is bad for teeth and braces because it is chewy and can tear off brackets and bend wires.

5. Nut Containing Treats
Nut containing treats such as Payday’s, Snickers, M&Ms and Hershey's all are a combination of one or more items you shouldn't have during Halloween (and orthodontic treatment). Nut containing treats are hard and can damage your braces.

Avoid these treats, along with other foods and keep your orthodontic care on plan. Be sure to always floss and brush and minimize sugary treats and foods. It's important to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, call our office immediately to arrange an appointment for repair.
